The upcoming live-action Naruto movie has received an update nearly 10 years after the film project was first announced. Originally a manga created by Masashi Kishimoto, the story follows its titular character who wants to become the Hokage of his village. A live-action film produced by Lionsgate was announced in 2015, though no substantial news on the project has surfaced since then.
Now, Variety reports screenwriter Tasha Huo is set to pen the live-action Naruto movie movie. The writer’s other recent credits include upcoming adaptations of the comic book Red Sonja and an animated series based on the Tomb Raider games. The manga adaptation is scheduled to be her next project, confirmed to still be developed by Lionsgate.
Will Naruto Work In Live-Action?
The original manga for the shōnen franchise is lengthy, consisting of 700 chapters that tell the full story. A manga of similar length is One Piece, the live-action TV adaptation of which became successful enough on Netflix to get renewed for season 2. Because of both series’ similar focus on action and adventure, it’s possible the upcoming film adaptation will be just as successful.
However, the reason why One Piece season 2 has been confirmed is because season 1 maintained faithfulness to the source material. In order for Naruto to work as a live-action project, Huo’s script will need to reflect Kishimoto’s original work, keeping its story and characters intact. This would make the film appeal to both those familiar with the franchise and newcomers that want to see it in live-action form.
The Naruto live-action cast will also be an important part of the series, as they’ll need to portray their characters similarly to their original counterparts. This means finding actors who can portray its core heroes in the same way they appear in the original series. With plenty of mystery surrounding how the film adaptation will be approached, a new update indicates more information about the movie may arrive soon.
