Joss Whedon initially eyed Angelina Jolie for his version of Wonder Woman, which was eventually canned.
Despite being one of the most beloved superheroes in fiction, unlike her Justice League peers Batman and Superman, it wasn’t until 2017 that Diana got her time to shine on the big screen. But 10 years prior to Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman hit the big screens, becoming one of the biggest hits from the struggling cinematic universe, Angelina Jolie was initially eyed to tackle the role of Diana.
Back in the mid-2000s, when superhero films were popping off, Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon originally crafted a script for a Wonder Woman feature, eyeing Angelina Jolie as Diana.

While the script never took off the ground and the movie never came to fruition, in the later years, Joss Whedon would go on to talk about this canned project in brief. Whedon further went on to explain why he considered Angelina Jolie the ideal pick for the role of the Amazonian. Per EW, he was quoted saying,
“For me, Wonder Woman was basically Angelina Jolie,” he said. “She spends a lot of time flying around. She works in a lot of different countries. She’s very global. And she’s appalled by the way people treat each other.”
Following Jolie’s experience in the realm of action and her prowess as an actor, it’s not hard to see why Whedon considered her the perfect fit to capture Diana’s emotional and brutal side.
Angelina JolieThe General Consensus Towards Joss Whedon’s Script Was Less Than Stellar
Even though the idea of Angelina Jolie playing Diana Prince is something most fans can get behind, many fans felt that canning the movie was a blessing in disguise. And to some extent, fans are right, as Whedon’s script for Wonder Woman, which leaked online, was far from his best works and mostly garnered negative reactions from fans of the character. But keeping in that it was the initial draft and would’ve certainly gone through several changes if it was greenlit, many of its shortcomings, including the lackluster side characters, could’ve been improved.

While Whedon’s script, which witnessed Diana’s story taking place in the present day, might not see the end of the day ever, fans are excited to witness what comes next for Diana with Gunn in charge.
Wonder Woman is available to stream on Max.
