Novak Djokovic is the record holder at the Australian Open, but even in this tournament, there is one statistic in which it is difficult for him to surpass Roger Federer…
Novak Djokovic set a record of winning the Australian Open 10 times but is still behind Roger Federer in terms of wins at Rod Laver Arena.
For a player like Novak Djokovic, creating records seems to have become a habit. Like at the Australian Open last January, for example, he broke many records when winning his first Grand Slam this year.
Nole cannot defend his title in 2022 when he was expelled from Australia for not being vaccinated against COVID-19.
Djokovic returned with success at the 2023 Australian Open, lifting the title for the 10th time Down Under. The 35-year-old, despite injuries, won the championship with relative ease.
Thanks to that, he equaled Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles, regained the world No. 1 position on the ATP rankings and became the second player in history, after Nadal, at Roland Garros (14 ), has won 10 or more Grand Slam tournaments.
Djokovic has put his name on many records on the men’s tour, and of course will continue to get closer to breaking and creating more records.
However, according to AusOpen.com journalist Matt Trollope, who has followed records at the Australian tournament for many years, there is one record held by Roger Federer that the Serbian may never surpass. .
Novak Djokovic set a record of winning the Australian Open 10 times but is still behind Roger Federer in terms of wins at Rod Laver Arena.
On the AusOpen.com podcast, Trollope said the record for most wins at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne Park is held by Federer (93).
“I started following the rankings before the 2023 Australian Open started. Djokovic is fourth with 68 wins on Rod Laver Arena, and after winning all seven of his matches at this year’s tournament, he is now third in the rankings with 75 wins. He has surpassed Nadal and is only 2 wins behind Serena Williams,” Trollope said.
This journalist also said that Djokovic will need to win the Australian Open three more times to surpass the Swiss “Express Train”.
“Currently he has 75 wins, he will probably need three more Australian Opens to surpass Roger Federer. Or 2 and a half (possibly reaching the quarterfinals). Novak will be almost 38 years old, so I’m not sure if that will happen or not,” Trollope continued.
Currently, Djokovic will not be allowed to enter the US due to the country’s current regulations, which stipulate that unvaccinated visitors will not be allowed to enter until May 11, 2023.
He is hoping to receive special permission to enter the US to compete in the Masters 1000 ‘Sunshine Double’ – Indian Wells and Miami Open next March. The Serbian tennis player remains on the roster for Indian Wells, where he has not played since 2019.
