Is the current form of Manchester City defender Ruben Dias becoming a concern for the European champions? City’s inspirational centre-back has been well below his usual lofty high standards at times this season. The Portuguese international is usually a calming influence for those around him. But two of his last three starts for City have been plagued with errors.
RB Leipzig was leading Pep Guardiola’s team by two goals at the half of their UEFA Champions League match. The treble winners’ defensive blunders gave Lois Openda the opportunity to score twice. The first mistake for the Bundesliga team’s first goal came from Manual Akanji. Their second was a result of Ruben Dias.
City’s defensive leader was fortunate to not see red just before half-time after a rash challenge on Xavi Simons after already being booked.
In Manchester City’s 4-all draw with Chelsea Ruben Dias was also well below his best. He gave away the penalty with a rash challenge which saw Chelsea equalise in their thrilling encounter. Dias responded last weekend with a much-improved display against Liverpool where he was nearly faultless at the back in the 1-all draw.
At his best Ruben Dias doesn’t mistime his challenges in either game. It does appear that the Portuguese defender is too eager to make an impact or too anxious with his play. Pep Guardiola spoke of this issue with City’s defence following the exciting win over RB Leipzig.
There is no doubt that Ruben Dias is currently playing below his best. He isn’t alone in that boat as the same issues have seemed to affect Kyle Walker against Chelsea and RB Leipzig.
They say form is temporary and class is permanent and City will be hoping that Dias returns to his best before it becomes a major concern for City.
