One Piece Author Eiichiro Oda Got Over 100 Death Threats

Unraveling the challenging life of a famous mangaka.

As one of the most popular manga artists ever, Eiichiro Oda has experienced extreme highs and lows over his long career. Creating the iconic One Piece series, which has sold over half a billion copies worldwide, has made him beloved yet also burdened him with huge expectations.

Oda Sensei has had to contend with various controversies, critiques of his work, as well as threatened lawsuits. Through it all, Oda has persevered thanks to his creative vision, dedication to his craft, and support from loyal fans.

However, the nonstop pressure of producing new content on a weekly basis for over 20 years has definitely taken a toll. He has pushed through sickness, fatigue, injuries to his hand, and long nights fueled by little sleep.

Very few artists achieve the immense commercial success Oda has, especially in the demanding manga industry.

But that level of fame and fortune comes with strings attached and pitfalls aplenty. Still, Oda soldiers on, continuing to churn out new adventures for his Straw Hat pirates, which inspire imagination and touch hearts for generation after generation. His career is a testament to a resilient, creative spirit.

Woman Sends Over 100 Death Threats to Eiichiro Oda

Eiichiro Oda’s immensely popular One Piece manga series has cemented his legacy as one of the most influential manga artists in history.

However, reaching such heights of fame has had significant downsides. The pressure to continuously produce new content week after week without fail for over 20 years has taken an immense physical and mental toll.

Oda has also dealt with unhinged fans whose obsession spirals out of control. Shockingly, he once received over 100 death threats from a woman after firing his assistant. She somehow blamed Oda for her own failures and directed her rage and instability at the manga master.

This is just one example of the dark side of renown he has experienced at times. Oda has also faced attempted lawsuits, credibility attacks, and intense criticism that comes with the territory.

The more beloved a manga artist, the more vitriol they inevitably have to deal with from detractors. Yet through it all, Oda has stayed dedicated to his art. He continues to crank out legendary chapters of One Piece that captivate millions in Japan and worldwide.

Though the pressures remain intense after 26 years straight, his creative vision and drive to complete Luffy’s story keep him afloat. Oda’s perseverance through such turbulence reminds us that producing timeless art often requires weathering severe storms.

Unhinged Fan Harassment

In a shocking case, Eiichiro Oda was bombarded with over 100 threats against his life spanning several months in 2007.

The perpetrator turned out to be Tomoko Fukushige, the wife of Oda’s recently terminated office assistant. Enraged over her husband’s dismissal, Fukushige unleashed a torrent of hate and violence towards the famed manga artist.

Specifically, from September to December 2007, Oda received menacing text messages from Fukushige saying “Die, die” over 100 times.

Clearly unstable and blinded by vengeful fury, Fukushige irrationally blamed Oda for her husband no longer working with him. Her aggression and criminal harassment persisted for months before Oda finally contacted the authorities to intervene.

After an investigation, law enforcement tracked down and arrested Fukushige in 2009 for the prolonged threats against Oda’s life.

The incident exemplifies the potential dark side of fame – obsession from unhinged individuals can quickly morph into dangerous harassment.

Fame’s Double-Edged Sword

For over three months, Oda had to worry whether Fukushige’s threats would escalate into actual attempts on his life.

It’s a sobering reminder that even beloved figures like Eiichiro Oda have to cope with the warped few who take admiration too far.

Oda surely never imagined that firing his assistant could indirectly spur a scorned wife to endanger his safety. His case revealed fame’s double-edged sword – adulation from millions, yet also vulnerability from the hostile fringe.

While Oda is adored around the world for his historic One Piece series, his sky-high popularity has unfortunately attracted threatening harassment, as evidenced by the disturbing incident with Tomoko Fukushige. Her menacing messages and death threats migrated from professional to dangerously personal.

This is a common tale in many spheres of stardom – the greater one’s acclaim and notoriety, the darker the shadows of instability that tag along. Genius and severe mental health issues often intersect.
