‘He has to take responsibility’: Paul Scholes blasts Bruno Fernandes

Paul Scholes has hit back at Bruno Fernandes‘ post match criticism of his side, telling the Man United captain to ‘take responsibility’ after he ‘gave two stupid fouls away that led to goals’ during their 3-3 draw against Galatasaray.

It came after the Portuguese midfielder had delivered some strong words to his team-mates in his post-match interview, claiming his side’s performance was ‘not enough’.

The Turkish side came back from going two goals down in Wednesday night’s match, with United needing a win to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive.

It looked like they could do just that, after Alejandro Garnacho and Fernandes fired two goals early on in the first half. But United gave away their two-goal cushion, with Fernandes conceding a free-kick on the edge of the Untied penalty area that allowed Ziyech to pull a goal back before half-time.

After the match, Fernandes told TNT Sports ‘It was another game where we could have closed the game.

Paul Scholes has slammed Bruno Fernandes following Man United’s 3-3 draw against Galatasaray

Scholes claimed that the Man United captain needed to ‘take responsibility’ for his side’s draw

Despite scoring in the match, Fernandes gave away a ‘cheap free-kick’ that allowed Hakim Ziyech to score Galatasaray’s first goal

‘We had too many chances, as I’ve said, and mistakes by ourselves. It’s too bad, to be honest.

‘I don’t want to be too negative, but what we’ve been doing in the Champions League is not enough.

‘We have to control our games every time, it’s not the first game we’ve had like this.’

In the second half, Fernandes conceded another foul off the right-hand side of the penalty area and Ziyech would step up to take the kick again.

He drove a ball into the box, which goalkeeper Andre Onana failed to control and fumbled into the back of his own net.

But Scholes hit out at Fernandes following his interview, stating Erik ten Hag’s side should have seen out the match.

‘I know in his interview he is talking about mistakes, but he made two big mistakes tonight by giving two stupid fouls away that lead to two goals,’ Scholes said to TNT Sports.

‘The full team, including himself as the captain, have to take responsibility – it’s a game they should win.

‘They just cannot keep clean sheets – the defence is all over the place, the keeper is making mistakes, Bruno giving away cheap free-kicks.

‘It makes the game difficult for them every time and they don’t need to do that.’

The result has left Man United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockouts hanging by a thin thread and will need to beat Bayern Munich and hope other results go their way to win.
