Latest Chelsea news as former Blues manager Jose Mourinho is linked with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich
Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been linked with the Bayern Munch job after leaving AS Roma in January.
Recent reports have claimed that the Portuguese coach is interested in taking over from Thomas Tuchel and is learning German as a result. Mourinho’s reported interest comes after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen which has left the German giants five points off Xabi Alonso’s league leaders.
Bayern’s struggles threaten to end their 11-year reign as Bundesliga champions with former Blues boss Tuchel under pressure to turn things around at the Allianz Arena. The 50-year-old replaced Julian Nagelsmann in March last year when the club were still in three competitions (league, cup and Champions League).
But Bayern were knocked out of both Europe and the cup before narrowly edging past Borrusia Dortmund to finish as champions once again. 2023/24 has also seen the Munich club struggle on occasions with Tuchel’s side already out of the German Cup and are now needing to claw back a five-point gap in the league to overtake unbeaten leaders Leverkusen.
If Mourinho was to take charge of Bayern, you can bet that he would want to splash the cash on expensive new additions in the summer. Below are three potential Chelsea players the former Blues boss may consider…
Cole Palmer
The talented attacker has arguably been Chelsea’s best player this season. Palmer has scored 10 goals and provided four assists so far for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Any potential exit would surely require a hefty fee with the 21-year-old only joining Chelsea last summer from Manchester City in a reported £40million deal. His departure would be a big blow for the Blues, although one caveat when it comes to a potential move to a Mourinho-coached Bayern are that creative players similar to Palmer have tended to struggle under the Portuguese
Reece James
The 24-year-old has endured an injury-hit season at Stamford Bridge, but when fit he is regarded as one of the best full-backs in Europe. James possesses the speed, power and technique which most teams would want to sign. His physical attributes make him the perfect player for a Mourinho team.
Christopher Nkunku
Nkunku has been another Chelsea player who has struggled to stay fit. But when the French forward has been in action for the Blues, the signs have been promising.
Two goals already in just seven appearances is a sign that when fit he can be a major asset for any team. He would also have no problem adapting to the Bundesliga having played for RB Leipzig for four seasons before arriving in West London last summer.
