South African youth choir uplifts community and inspires social change through music

In a remarkable display of resilience and creativity, the Tund Choir of Kaicha, South Africa, is transforming lives and igniting hope through the power of music. This 35-member youth choir, founded just two years ago, is breathing new life into ancient African hymns, turning the struggles of their community into a powerful anthem of unity and change.

Led by music director Isaaka Makajana, the choir’s stirring compositions are a heartfelt tribute to their roots, resonating with a message that transcends language barriers. “We sing music in our language to express who we are,” Makajana explains, emphasizing the inclusivity of their mission. In a community grappling with high crime rates and unemployment, the Tund Choir serves as a vital lifeline, nurturing raw talent and fostering a sense of belonging.

Currently rehearsing in makeshift spaces, the choir is on the brink of securing a dedicated venue within six months, a move that promises to amplify their impact. Their journey has already taken them beyond South Africa’s borders, with a recent invitation to tour Paris after being discovered on social media by a French artist. For many members, including 26-year-old Zinsey Mazoto, this experience was both exhilarating and daunting, marking their first time outside their home country.

The Tund Choir’s influence is undeniable, having composed the score for a locally produced film that earned an Oscar nomination, showcasing their extraordinary talent. For the youngest members, like a hopeful 9-year-old girl, the future is not just bright—it sings with endless possibilities.

As the Tund Choir continues to uplift their community, their story serves as a powerful reminder that music can heal, inspire, and bring about meaningful social change. The world is listening, and the voices of Kaicha are ready to be heard.
